Where to study
Tsinghua's School of Environment is the strongest overall and advises national air-quality and carbon-neutrality policy. Peking University ranks second globally in ARWU's environmental science subject table. Zhejiang and Tongji lead in water treatment and solid waste. Huazhong University of Science and Technology is strong in water treatment for cold climates and environmental health.
Nanjing University specialises in atmospheric science and climate modelling, and Beihang and BIT work on energy systems and combustion.
Research themes
Air pollution and atmospheric chemistry, water pollution control and desalination, solid waste and plastic recycling, carbon capture and storage, renewable energy systems and grid integration, electric vehicle and battery lifecycle analysis, and environmental policy and carbon markets.
China's national emissions trading scheme, launched in 2021 and expanded since, is the largest carbon market in the world and has created a research field around it.
Why study it in China
The scale of the data, the installed renewable capacity, the pilot programmes in cities across the country, and the direct policy connection of leading faculties make China one of the most productive places in the world to do environmental research.
English-taught master's and doctoral programmes with funded places exist at most of the universities listed above.
