Compiled from published accounts: the four career routes that dominate, and what each requires.

Route one: a Chinese firm's international business

The most commonly reported path is a role with a Chinese company expanding overseas — Huawei, ZTE, BYD, CATL, Xiaomi, Alibaba, and the construction and engineering contractors working across Asia, Africa and Latin America. These roles pay competitively, value Chinese language and local market knowledge, and frequently involve extended periods outside China.

The hiring emphasis is on Chinese ability and on understanding how the company works internally, which is precisely what a degree in China gives you.

Route two: a multinational's China operations

Multinationals operating in China recruit international graduates for supply chain, operations, marketing and government-relations roles, where native-level English plus working Chinese is the specific combination they need. These positions are most concentrated in Shanghai, Beijing, Suzhou and Shenzhen.

The requirement is usually a work permit, which normally requires two years of post-graduation experience or a higher degree, so many graduates first take a role elsewhere and transfer in.

Route three: home country with China expertise

A large share of graduates return home and work in trade, logistics, import-export, education, translation, tourism or government roles connected to China. Chinese trading companies routinely recruit in the countries where they operate, and Chinese-language ability is a scarce and well-paid skill in many markets.

This route is frequently the most financially rewarding relative to local cost of living, particularly in Africa, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Route four: further study

A significant minority continue to doctoral study, either in China — where funding is relatively easy to obtain — or elsewhere, using a Chinese master's as the basis. Chinese degrees are recognised for admission by most universities internationally, though a strong publication record matters more than the institution's name.
