The genuine advantages

Teaching staff at the strongest English-taught programmes — Tsinghua, Peking, SJTU's joint institutes, ZJU's Haining campus, SUSTech — are frequently overseas-trained, and the teaching style is closer to Western practice than the Chinese norm, with more coursework assessment and class participation. Class sizes are usually smaller than Chinese-taught equivalents.

You also get access to China — the laboratories, the industry, the field sites, the people — while studying in a language you already have. For a two-year master's, this is often the single fastest route to China expertise from a standing start.

The common disappointments

The most frequently reported issue is the social and academic bubble: English-taught cohorts can be entirely international, taught in a separate building, with limited contact with Chinese students. Progress in Chinese can stall completely.

The second is inconsistent English. Some programmes advertise English-medium delivery but rely on slides translated from Chinese, and examination papers may still be in Chinese. Ask for past examination papers in the target language before accepting an offer — that is the definitive test.

The third is that the certificate may or may not record the language of instruction, which matters for some employers and regulators.

How to get the best out of it

Take Chinese language courses seriously even though they are not required, join Chinese-majority clubs, and deliberately spend time outside the international building. Students who do this describe a completely different experience from those who do not, and the ones who do are the ones who find employment involving China afterwards.

Las cifras de matrícula, plazos y estipendios se revisan cada ciclo. Confirma siempre la situación actual con la oficina de estudiantes internacionales de la universidad y en el portal oficial campuschina.org antes de solicitar.
